The Retego Labs corrosion test method

  • A water sample is taken from the system.
  • Water is added to a test tube containing a brass or carbon steel spheres.
  • Brass (copper) test is for potable water applications. Carbon steel is commonly found in industrial and oilfield applications.
  • Test tubes are placed on a rocker, which continuously mixes the water and spheres.
  • Carbon steel is mixed for 2 hours and brass is mixed for 24 hours.
  • After the test, water from the tubes is added to a cuvette (see POST sample).
  • Water without exposure to the metal is added to a reagent cuvette (see PRE sample).
  • Cuvettes contain reagents that react with iron or copper.

Test results

  • It is normal for the PRE sample not to exhibit a color change.
  • Systems can be constructed from plastic pipes, and have limited steel and brass piping or fittings.
  • Cu and Fe from corrosion will be diluted to low levels.
  • No positive reaction is observed. However, the water can be corrosive.
  • The intensity of the color is proportional to corrosion rate.
  • Determine copper and iron concentration by comparison to standards.
